Google playing with SEOs

October 25th, 2010 § § permalink

Aaron has  a new post on SEO Book,  about the current algorithmic change made by Google in order to prepare for the upcoming shopping season. In the article he says:

  • they want to make SEO unpredictable & unreliable (which ultimately means less resources are spent on SEO & the results are overall less manipulated)
  • they want to force businesses (who just stocked up on inventory) to enter the AdWords game in a big way

Oh well, he has quite nailed it. From what I’ve seen and heard at IMTO 2010, this has already happen in Romania and more and more ex SEOs are joining the PPC battlefield.

This is somehow good for the ones that stay in the game, but in the long term it might turn into a fail for Google. I’m seeing on my clients more and more projects that not they are not optimized but they are a complete disaster from a search engine point of view.

In the end, only time will tell if this was a winning strategy.

Some time ago I was invited by Ciprian Gavriliu to give a presentation on SEO planning at the IMTO 2010 conference in Iasi. Below you will find the support that I used.

An interesting coincidence is that on the day I held my presentation, Vladimir has also posted a nice post on his blog on the same topic along with a case study.

P.S. Details about the topics discussed you can find here (in romanian) and also a photo gallery.

Startup mistakes: Etacts

October 24th, 2010 § § permalink

A few days ago I’ve received a newsletter from the Etacts team regarding an update of their product. Today I wanted it to give it a try but surprise surprise is not compatible with the Firefox 4 beta. This is one of the most basic mistakes done by startups.

The idea is: when you have a young product targeted to early adopters, you make sure that you blend well in their environment. Otherwise, like in the case of Etacts, you are going to loose the momentum and all your PR and development efforts are going to be less efficient

Yahoo Messenger 2.0 for iOs: FAIL!

October 12th, 2010 § § permalink

As was previously announced, Yahoo Messenger 2.0 is now live on the Apple Store. Unfortunately this is not the best app and is missing the basic things:

  • As an app specifically builty for iOS 4.1, the icons are not made for the retina screen and look like crap
  • Even though the Ipod Touch 4th gen has 2 cameras and works with Face time, Yahoo made this version compatible only with Iphone 3GS and 4

Hopefully, based on user pressure we will be seeing a new version pretty soon that fixes all this issues

UPDATE:

And here we have it, an official answer from the development team, on their official blog:

We’re working on support for video on iPod Touch 4 and hope to release an update very shortly. Appreciate your patience.

So, I just hope that short means short :)

New video chat app for Iphone & Ipod Touch

October 10th, 2010 § § permalink

Reuters has announced yesterday that Yahoo! will be the first popular app on Iphone / Ipod Touch (4th gen) that will feature video chats. While there are some apps that do that (Fring for example), Yahoo has the benefits of a large user base and the desktop integration will make it an instant winner. Hopefully, by this, Skype will be finally motivated to make the step forward and release an update.

From what Reuters has found out, this is not just an idea or a project in development but a final app that has already benn submitted and  is pending the approval:

UPDATE 2: A Yahoo spokesperson clarified that the iPhone app has not yet been approved.
