Google+ is not dead and will not die…

…as Slate proclaims today. This is just another (intentional?) logic fallacy article caused by over generalization or the urge for sensationalistic, traffic driving titles. Where are they right though, is the point that Google+ has no chance (did it ever had?) to overthrown Facebook dominance in the (generalists) social networks competition.

There are too many users with too much history and new features added periodically on Facebook so the chance of repeating the histories of HI5 and Myspace are pretty slim.

On the other hand, Google+ is too big for Google to fail. Doing that can have worse effects than the failures that Google Buzz and Google Wave.

Instead of dying, Google+ will be re branded. From the social network it tried to be in the social hub it can be. This means that all the current (and future) assets that Google has, will be slowly and nicely integrated together under the same concept, and they will no longer be private tools but social, collaborative instruments.

And this process is not new, but in these ADHD driven times, people are (too) quickly to forget and (too) quickly prone to repeat the mistakes of the history. Google is now in the same position that Yahoo was a few years ago, but maybe they will make it work. A few years ago, Yahoo had profiles. And then they thought that they have a large enough user base to monetize those profiles and turn them into a social network. And so Yahoo 360 was born. For reasons I cannot remember, that miserably failed (as Google+ will soon) and they turned to the social hub approach and Yahoo Pulse was born (which again miserably fails failed and it will be returning to its origins as Yahoo Profiles).

But Google stands a big chance here for multiple reasons:

  • Not like Yahoo, Google has a lot a real assets that people actually use
  • Google has a mobile platform (and a browser, and a netbook OS) where they can push their product
  • Google is deeply integrating G+ into the search results through authorship. Every author out there wants their search results optimized so they will join, use and exploit the platform

So Google+ is not dead and will not die. It will just follow its own course on another more successful track

Yahoo Messenger video chat for Ipod Touch

The Yahoo Messenger team has kept their promise made when they launched the 2.0 version of their Iphone / Ipod Touch app and today they released version 2.0.1 that enables video calling for Ipod Touch users that have the latest (4th) generation.

This is a big step not only for Yahoo but for all the Iphone / Ipod Touch users that will benefit from the new standards imposed by Yahoo. Let’s see who’s going to be next:

  • Skype? They have the infrastructure as Fring used their API to do the same thing. It should be very easy for them to turn it on
  • Google? They don’t have a custom Gtalk Iphone / Ipod Touch app but would add value to their current IM offering

I know that there are other apps around that provide the same features, but let’s face it. Without multi platform integration and forcing the users to subscribe to yet another service is freaking epic fail.

Yahoo Messenger 2.0 for iOs: FAIL!

yahoo messenger ios update 300x215 Yahoo Messenger 2.0 for iOs: FAIL!

As was previously announced, Yahoo Messenger 2.0 is now live on the Apple Store. Unfortunately this is not the best app and is missing the basic things:

  • As an app specifically builty for iOS 4.1, the icons are not made for the retina screen and look like crap
  • Even though the Ipod Touch 4th gen has 2 cameras and works with Face time, Yahoo made this version compatible only with Iphone 3GS and 4

Hopefully, based on user pressure we will be seeing a new version pretty soon that fixes all this issues

UPDATE:

And here we have it, an official answer from the development team, on their official blog:

We’re working on support for video on iPod Touch 4 and hope to release an update very shortly. Appreciate your patience.

So, I just hope that short means short icon smile Yahoo Messenger 2.0 for iOs: FAIL!

While there are some apps that do that (Fring for example), Yahoo has the benefits of a large user base and the desktop integration will make it an instant winner. Hopefully, by this, Skype will be finally motivated to make the step forward and release an update.

From what Reuters has found out, this is not just an idea or a project in development but a final app that has already benn submitted and  is pending the approval:

UPDATE 2: A Yahoo spokesperson clarified that the iPhone app has not yet been approved.
